Illustration and Product Design
- This was a class project where we were to use image-making as a key-part of a designing a product. I created Double Agent, which is a card game where you try to win through espionage and subterfuge. I wanted to emulate the cheaply produced kids card games of my youth and create the feeling of a card game which had been left in a drawer for years and years; completely out of time and place.I created 13 illustrations with four colour variations. The illustrations are based on different gadgets inspired by those that were used in spy movies in the 60s. Since the cards were small, it was important that the illustrations were simple and easy to understand. I wanted to have a retro feel to the illustrations and cards, so I chose illustrators like Saul Bass, and Alvin Lustig as a jumping off point. I kept forms very clean and geometric. The four main colours are desaturated and retro-looking, which also printed well on my paper choice. The paper is Mohawk Via Vellum which is porous and with visible fibers integrated into it, giving it the look of a 60’s low-cost print job.
